caterer: check

enter kelly, the super chef.

she's from gallucci's catering, the now-finalized exclusive caterer of our wedding. :) kelly rocks. she whipped up all of the major dishes for the reception out at mom and dad's house - and did all the dishes. heavenly.

without further adieu...

the salads for the wedding:
  • on the left - a caesar salad with their custom dressing
  • on the right - mixed greens with candied walnuts, gorgonzola, cherry tomatoes and a pear vinaigrette
  • (the adult beverages are not yet determined :) - but used for tasting purposes)

michael, my almost married-for-a-year brother and now groomsman and official almost-brother-in-law of jonathan, highlighting the main courses:
  • chicken marsala in a onion/mushroom glaze
  • rotelli pasta in a red meat sauce with fresh peppers and mushrooms
  • penne pasta in a cream sauce with sundried tomatoes

notice the other things he featured in the photo above? check out his photog skills following... :)

good stuff tonight. thanks to mom and dad for hosting...and to jonathan and mike for putting up with me and my nutty attention to detail...and for being such willing taste testers.

onto the cake! anyone want to join? :)

a little r&r in north cove

just back into the land of blackberry cell coverage, wireless internet, and normal summer weather. :) right after the bar exam finished on thursday, jonathan headed back down to my house where we packed his 4runner, and headed to his family's beach house in north cove.

he is much better than me at relaxing...his version involved sleeping, playing with the dogs, reading harry potter (of which i read the last 10 pages and threatened to tell him the end the whole time...the first and last 10 pages of harry potter i'll ever read) and more sleeping. my version of relaxing involved addressing save the dates, going through to-do lists, following up on calendar goodies for the next month or so, taking in some movies from comcast on demand, and reading through the 20+ magazines and papers i brought down.

scary to say...but i think i am turning more and more into my mom each day. i am kicking myself for mocking her 2 bags of reading things and annual 'haul the christmas cards to maui every year' tradition. i am destined to follow in her footsteps.

needless to say, by friday and saturday i had unwound a bit. his fam arrived and it was so much fun to see them...played an endless amount of scene it squabble (which i rocked) and scene it disney (which, surprisingly, jonathan rocked), and bbq'd for most of the weekend. took in mass in westport (the only sunday mass was saturday at 10 am) and bummed around westport a bit.

we both needed a break. it was a great, long overdue break. loved hanging out with kevin and heidi, and are crossing our fingers that they'll be at the big family reunion next weekend. :)

a few of my favorites...

from the ever-tempermental weather - bright and sunny one moment, rainy and windy the next...

a sleepy viper - who was recovering from her first knock-down, drag out with maggie earlier in the week. two puncture wounds and a big bruise...but lots of sleep helped her get back in her groove...and it should be noted that viper brought the fight on by stealing maggie's bone. :)

kite flying in the moonlight...

jonathan...

proof that viper's back in the game...she was making sand angels all over the beach...

and my absolute most favorite photo...of jonathan, maggie and viper in the water...

and just like that

the bar exam is over!

we're off to the beach for a long overdue weekend of r&r until monday...and since there's no cell reception or internet and the only sunday mass is at 10 am on saturday...blogging will be light. everything's packed and ready to go as soon as he gets here. yea for a vacation!

the prince will post on his last two days when he's returned to normal. :)

thank you, to everyone, for your prayers and support...the wait (71 days) now begins for the results!

our engagement shoot

my favorite shot by erwin...where i'm stealing jonathan's brains.

on the sunday following the hottest days of the year, we headed up to gas works in jeans with chocolate and cabernet tops. imagine how excited jonathan was...when the mercury hit 85+ in our dark jeans! he was a great sport - though i couldn't talk him into heading into the lake with our clothes on. there's always hope for the wedding shoot! :)

speaking of, everyone keeps asking who is going to shoot our wedding -- and that's been one of the toughest decisions yet! michael g would be a natural choice - except for that he's blessing us with his voice - singing in the wedding Mass and mc'ing the reception. i think i have a plan in mind though, but if all else fails, i'll just set up a tripod and carry the remote with me throughout the wedding. just kidding!

there are several wonderfully talented people i'm thinking of...so when it's decided, i'll let you know! :)

anyway, onto the pics...

erwin, who makes me laugh with his laugh, called this "shelley's signature laugh"....

and how can you not love someone who takes a self-portrait with you at the end of the shoot?!? that rocks!

thanks, erwin, for a great afternoon...i can't wait to start designing our invites! :)

1 Day Down, 2 to go

Whew, just got back to the hotel, and I must be hanging out with Shelley too much, because my checklist looked like this.
  • Upload Exams to the Washington State Bar Association (No Stella this is not the Association of Bartenders)
  • Text Shelley to let her know I'm alive
  • Check Email to make sure Exams uploaded properly
  • Try and surprise Shelley by actually blogging

So yeah, Shelley beat me too it, and if anyone paid attention the care package below you know that Shelley is definitely attempting to win a Fiancee of the year award. In fact I had to show off the package to some friends and they all thought she ordered it, she should really market them next year.

As for the exam it is crazy, I'll bring my camera phone tomorrow to take a picture of the setup. It's crazy there is like 32 rows and about 26 columns, so you figure close to 850 people in an event center all with their laptops typing like crazy.

It's also kind of weird that this is the first I've seen many of my friends from law school, yet we can't be happy for this Reunion, instead we are brought together by the great tragedy that is the bar exam. I feel like one of those people that laments at a funeral that, "it shouldn't take something like this to get us all together."

Each section is 2 hours and 15 minutes long and covers 3 essay questions. I felt pretty good about the first six, but I think the last 3 kicked my butt. Today we were surprised to find the questions covered, Criminal Procedure, Property(2 of those buggers), Family Law and Community Property, Secured Transactions, Sales/UCC Article 2, Evidence, Constitutional Law, and Contracts. Overall though, it's not as bad as I think, and I really do believe that the exam is totally doable. Thank you all for your support and encouragement I couldn't do it without all of your understanding and support, and I promise the fun Jonathan will return once this test is over.

My bets for tomorrow are 2 Civil Procedure Questions, 2 Torts Questions, a Landlord-Tenant Question, a Criminal Law Questions, and a few more from the grab bag of law.

Tune in tomorrow for perhaps a picture or two and further analysis before I start the Professional Responsibility/Ethics Section.

the countdown ends

today's the first day of the july bar exam in the state of washington. jonathan is checking into the exam at 6:15 this morning, after a full night's studying up at the hotel in bellevue.

the culmination of three years of law school and eight weeks of hardcore studying. no pressure. :)

i'm confident he's prepared well for it - just praying for grace in the questions that are asked, and the wisdom to give them the answers they're looking for. :) this is the breakdown of the exam. it's 2 1/4 days long, and finishes on thursday morning.

i sent him up with a little survival kit - which he was allowed to open once he arrived at the hotel.

the contents?

a few of his favorite things...and some of mine too. :)

sweet maui onion chips, cherry coke zero, jelly bellys, wheat thins, homemade m&m cookies, junior mints, a fruit and nut mix from starbucks, a happy camper crunch krispette, eclipse mints, a card, and of course...a 'save the date' for our wedding...which reminds him that there's life after these 3 days. :)

if you wouldn't mind...would you offer up a quick prayer today for him as he begins the exam? adding in a little intercession to st. thomas more wouldn't hurt either! :)

muchas gracias!

to my sister...

...wishing you a very special birthday...

this is one of my favorite pics of you - not only because of how your blue eyes sparkle even when you're cold in the january snow - but because of how much my little brother loves looking into those sparkly blue eyes. thank you for making him so happy.

happy birthday! i love you!

...and they're famous!

today's tacoma news tribune features a story on benedict's recent document and the local church's reaction to it. right near the top of the photo are none other than my papa and my brother. in the row in front of them is paige (in bright green), liz, and sandy of brownrice fame.

their 15 minutes of fame begins now. :)

and as for the document, it is creating tons of unneeded hoopla. for example, the hoopla is created by most of the catholics who don't agree with it, though they haven't actually read it, yet still don't agree with what they haven't read, but will still offer their opinion and disagree with the pope because they don't get it. "i don't know what i'm talking about, but i definitely have an opinion on it."

the document didn't really say anything that hasn't been said before...it's just being reiterated now.

needless to say, i was disappointed with the article overall, though fr. mike communicated well what the document was saying.

sweet paper goodies

i am addicted to the company knock knock.

they have all kinds of paper goods...in the last few weeks, i picked up these mad libs style thank yous, the prescription pads, and to-do stickies which are finding their way all around the wedding binder.

for the record, if jonathan knew these existed, he'd buy them for me by the gross. :)

anyway, when shopping at the paper zone with jonathan, he found their wedding thank you notes...complete with check boxes. how sweet are these? :)

i think it's the check boxes that i love the most...
but knowing that my own personal etiquette angels would be all over me for check boxes...i'm unveiling the first of our wedding paper suite in chocolate and cabernet...which, of course, i hired shelley mauss photography to design a month or so ago...

you'll find below the 'save the date' cards (more commonly known in jonathan-ese as the famous "STD" cards) and the cover of our thank yous.
  • the std cards
a 4x6 postcard with rounded corners (which i had cut at the printer) with a uv gloss on the photo side. jonathan picked the photo, and left me to decide the rest. his eyes started to glaze over when i started talking about the ligatures and photoshop brushes... :)
    [a special thank you to
marie, who offered to 'talk fonts' whenever jonathan got bored with things that only paper-loving gals like]
  • the thank you cards
an a2 sized folded card (4.25x6.25) with a chocolate back. it's the first place i used our monogram: which either looks like his initials (JS) or that we're becoming jesuits (SJ)... using just his last name's initial made it look like it was all about me...so i chose JS with a dot between them. :)

and for one last sweet find, which i will need to find a way to use...

the company moo, from the united kingdom. their sticker books and minicards are ridiculously cute. and with free global shipping during the month of july, there's seriously no reason NOT to try them! :)

the only sunshine

...today is found in my comforter. :)

a long day which didn't seem to end, a giant deluge of rain, and a really big wet doggy in the back yard...has me wanting to curl up under my favorite orange columbia comforter with a big mug of hot chocolate and a book.

in the middle of july.

what is wrong with this picture?!?

to do next week: get the woolly mammoth named viper a haircut.

circle journal: back where i come from

took a break from the editing of 2000+ wedding images to pull together one of my last layouts for the circle journal project. pulled two of my favorite photos - with mom and me and our dog(s). in 1977 - the only dog was sheila, and now, andy and viper.

this is claudine's "back where i come from" circle journal...which has some amazing pages in it. i can't wait for her to see it...since she'll be getting it back complete!

for the specs...
i used the same action over both photos to tie them together - even though the quality is distinctly different (color film from the 1970s vs. my digital canon 28ish years later), they seem more uniform to one another. i sampled the beige, olive and cream from the photos. the brush along the bottom is from designfruit. you can click on them to read the journaling.

the first page...photo taken at the old house on henderson bay

the second page...taken at the 'new' house on henderson bay (we moved into it when i was 4 years old...in 1981)

confidential to austin

wishing you an incredible 13th birthday...

thanks for always keeping me on my toes, taking such good care of my lawn (and battling maggie's 'dinosaur turds'), and being such a great older brother to paige.

you are one of my favorite parts of living on our block. :)

happy birthday!

the un-camping weekend

complete with camping-like photos.

what was originally scheduled to be the estrogen militia's campout weekend morphed into a little something different...

stella, jonathan and i met up in lacey on friday night for dinner with a good friend of mine, david. he and i met when mike was in the seminary, and we made a pilgrimage across sicily and italy with mount angel. he's doing his CPE this summer in olympia, while living at the st. martin's monastery. it was so good to see him.

saturday, took in a bit of the gig harbor summer arts festival. it was one of the last days to take the narrows bridge without the new toll in place. lindsay and i headed out to mom and dad's for a bit of r&r in the sunshine...and here's a few of my faves...

this tree had fallen in the windstorms of last fall...i love the drippy drip drips from it.

lindsay, when asked to do something "baywatch-y" - tossing her hair back while at the helm of the famous shelley michael sea ray.

around the point near horsehead bay...

you know i've accessorized a bit too much when the havaianas match the boat. :)

dead mans island...
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
today, hit the 10 am mass at st. charles before jonathan and i head up to seattle for our own photo shoot...he was very patient the other night when shopping for chocolate and cabernet threads to wear today. :) erwin wijanto is shooting them - and i can't wait. anyone who ends his photo shoots with a self-portrait is a photographer after my own heart!
and tonight...a work night (for me) with studying (for him)...

the world expands

Give great care to the preparation of engaged couples
and be close to young married couples,
so that they will be for their children and the whole community
an eloquent testimony of God's love.
Pope John Paul II, 2001

the other night, we went out to dinner (looks like this post must have spurred a date night!) and took a break from jonathan's bar study. limoncello lemonades have never tasted so good!!

one of my favorite parts of the evening? jonathan shared with me why he chose his best men and groomsmen, and i shared with him why i chose my maids of honor and bridesmaids. as we talked, it became obvious just how blessed we are in our relationship. so many people (including our bridal party) have shaped our lives, have guided us in the direction that we have come, and have supported us through life's ups and downs.

i love jpii's quote above - the importance of preparation and support - of the community around us as an engaged couple. we are who we are because of those we love.

for me, one of the most significant things that i appreciate in my family and friends is their ability to forgive me when i screw up. trust me, it happens more often than i'd like to believe. jonathan's learning that more and more each day. ;) thank you, for cheering me on when i succeed, and for loving me even when i fail. you help me to grow and become the wife and (future) mom i want to be.

188 days remain until our wedding. as the great philosopher rocky balboa once said, "i got gaps; you got gaps; we fill each other's gaps". as our lives expand to welcome the other in, i expanded our e-world a bit when i invited jonathan onto viper's world as a blog author.

over the upcoming months, we plan to share about our journey to married life, and feature those we love in the bridal party. you'll probably be amused by jonathan's stories about me and all my annoying traits - which he outlined in detail the other night. i'll admit, it was pretty funny. i can be pretty annoying at times.

welcome to the new viper's world...which in 189 days, will also be maggie's world too. :)

just because

i seriously love these photos of my wet wet doggy.

she was spazzing out so much on the chair that maggie came over to see what the problem was. i ♥ them.

on the road again

mike and i...375 miles in 95 degrees...from tacoma to forks. upon a wrong turn, found ourselves at the dungeness wildlife refuge, which was super cool. who would have thought that right near the rainforest is sandy desertland?

speaking of super cool...check out the new view from mom and dad's upper parking area, after they thinned out the trees today.

good stuff.

survival of the fittest: the bar exam

jonathan's heading into week five of studying for the bar.

in april, he emailed me the following article about the bar prep. i had no idea how much he and i would identify with it! read on...

WHAT I DID DURING MY BAR EXAM SUMMER
Test Takers Go Through Several Emotional Stages

ABA Journal E-Report
May 30, 2003
The Rodent

April, the poet wrote, is the cruelest month and thereby gave away the fact that he had never taken the bar exam. Had he done so, he would have known that July is far crueler, and that the months you spend waiting for your results can be pretty darn mean, too.

Even as a kid growing up with only a casual interest in the law, I knew the bar examination was tough. You see, we had a family friend who took it several times and never passed. He eventually gave up, opened a chain of car washes, became a multimillionaire and retired at the age of 41. Tragically, he never had the opportunity to practice law.

If you happen to be spending this summer gearing up for the bar exam, you will need to prepare yourself for a change of lifestyle. You should also prepare yourself for the various stages the bar exam taker goes through during this delicate period. They include denial, depression, fear, isolation, boredom, agitation, confusion, resentment and acute apathy (often resulting in poor personal hygiene).

Actually, it might not be accurate to call them stages. Instead of coming one at a time and in order, they will more likely hit you at the same time. While reading the bar review outlines on civil procedure or evidence, for example, it's quite possible to simultaneously feel depressed, fearful, agitated and bored.

For me, isolation was the big thing during the months I studied for the bar. Friends and family cut off all contact so they wouldn't interfere with my study schedule. The hardest days were those when there were no bar review classes, and I spent the entire day at home with the books. The highlight was when my mail arrived. I was grateful for any communication with the outside world even if it was in the form of a letter from the board of bar examiners indicating that my application for membership failed to report all my priors.

Isolation was followed closely by confusion and resentment. I was confused and resentful that I had to take the exam at all, and really couldn't fathom why lawyers were required to pass a comprehensive test before practicing. After all, I had read the occasional newspaper story about the discovery of someone practicing law without a license. In some of those cases, it turned out the person never even went to law school. Inevitably, such stories went on to quote colleagues, opposing counsel and even judges all complimenting the unlicensed attorney on his or her exemplary legal skills.

I became so resentful of the bar exam that I made it part of my studying by looking for constitutional arguments as to why one should not be forced to take an exam in order to pursue one's selected livelihood. And I also gave a lot of thought to other professions. My friends who went to business school simply graduated and went to work. Same for almost all the other professionals I could think of. I came to regret not becoming an airplane pilot, doubting they had to pass a comprehensive exam just to prove competency to land a jumbo jet at night on an icy runway. I mean, how hard could that be?

Once the two months of studying were over, I had three days' worth of exam, and then three months of waiting for the results. I also had the various stages and emotions that go with those things. Then, after learning I had passed, I entered a brand new stage: selfishness. Like most other lawyers, I could suddenly see the importance of being licensed, and I began to think that they should make the exam even harder for everyone who had not yet passed it.

i laughed at the time, not realizing just how close to the truth it is! but it really hits close to home. :) i've been praying for strength for him as he's been preparing, and there's finally light at the end of the tunnel...just 17 days away!

our recent timeline - we got engaged on june 1st, finished relay on june 2nd, and he began the barbri prep course on june 4th. suffice to say, our last 'official' date was a month ago, on june 8th when we went to the wac in seattle with mom and dad, and onto west side story. :)

most of his days (from monday - saturday) start with an hour or two or studying, then down to the washington state historical museum for the barbri class for 2 or 3 hours, and then 8-10 hours of studying following class.

the whole experience has been a range of emotion - from focused determination to exhaustion to giddiness that he's finished a dozen essays to burnout and finally a loss of all emotion. :)

the video below was what he sent to me during one of his first weeks of studying - to help me better understand what he's going through in his daily classes. it's been eight years since i studied for the series 7, so it gave me a few flashbacks. :) (if you're having trouble with the sound, you might need to double-click on it to launch a new window)

the brownrices have kept a good eye on him when he's been hunkered down studying at my house and i've been off shooting photos or at the office - sending sustenance over and keeping the dogs walked. a really special e-thank you to you! ♥

the exam is two weeks from this tuesday. please keep him in your prayers over the upcoming two weeks...

monday happies

it's nearly midnight, and we are entering the 16th hour straight of studying (for jonathan) and 9th hour of editing photos in photoshop (for me). a marathon of work for both of us...though i think i'm getting the funner end of the stick. :) he's 25 essays into 40 needed by tomorrow.

to celebrate the upcoming ending to today's long day in front of the computer...here's some of my happies from the day:
  • 1 wedding 95% fully edited
from a little while back - with the corrupt images recovered! yea! a great lesson to always back up your files!
  • 2 weddings partially edited
check here for my favorites from mark and marie's wedding later today, and art and kristina's in the next week or so
  • the new toasted parmesan and asiago wheat thins.
like puffs of heaven in a cracker.
  • hotel bedjump
finding a website that combines two of my favorite things: jumping and hotels. this seriously cracks me up.
  • the microplane foot file
the coolest and grossest invention ever, all rolled into one. i wear open back heels and flip flops all summer, and those are the enemy of cute feet. i scoffed at the price, only to find after using it, that it is the best pedicure starter in the history of the world. it's that cool!
  • the save the date cards are ordered
after suffering from a mental creative block -- finally -- these are designed and sent to the printer! we have our engagement shoot in six days, so the actual wedding invites should be designed and sent to print in a month or so. whoo hoo!
  • sparkling peach iced tea
i love crystal light, but adding diet ginger ale just took it to another level. between sparkling peach iced tea and sparkling raspberry lemonade, summertime life is good.
  • being home long enough to make 3 meals in one day
i even broke out my super fabulous tangerine and lime custom apron (thanks to the creative design of the brownrices)! if you were at my house today, chances are you had for breakfast: sharp cheddar scrambled eggs, artichoke and garlic sausage, and grand central's como bread with apple butter; for lunch: loose meat cheeseburgers and banana vanilla yogurt with bananas and blueberry granola (though if your name was jonathan, you were grumpy when you realized it wasn't sweet pudding, it was organic yogurt); and for dinner: fresh spinach salad with warm baked chicken and poppy seed dressing. there might have even been a snack of cucumbers and tsatsiki. rachael ray, eat your heart out!
  • maggie's giant paws
the best quote by dad the other day? "maggie makes andy look small!" the other night, when i was cleaning my camera gear, i looked up, and maggie had reached out her big big paw to me as she stuck out her tongue. check out little viper on the couch, who is clearly concerned that maggie might be getting more attention than her. :) yup, i think she's officially grown on me. ♥

for the love of kenny

it doesn't get much better than this: 80 degrees at qwest field, free parking (because vickie and i are super fabulous parking spot hunters), a few jack daniels punches, and the lineup...sara evans, sugarland, brooks and dunn, and kenny chesney.

(pat green was there...but we were late...so he doesn't get to figure into our perfect 7/7/7 afternoon!)

i snagged my little canon point and shoot (just 3 MP compared to my 8 and 12 MP beasts) and brought it along with me. after my 23rd self portrait, i realized just how much i miss this little camera! :)

loved the show - sara evans was super cute, sugarland was fun (though the lead singer needs to learn a few more dance moves than just her hip gyrations...seriously...someone that i finally dance better than!), and brooks and dunn just rocked.

and kenny? kenny was kenny. vickie and i were in heaven.

probably not as heavenly as andrea and claudine's experience though...check out claudine's pics from the sand pit. oh, jealousy!!

this is what you get with the baby zoom and canon powershot:

when i realized that i could trick out my point and shoot with custom features...i used the brand new batteries up. i know, i am a multimedia geek.

mikey and kristine...chilling in the sun after a long day remodeling...

and vickie and me...we were definitely #1 and #1!

why stop at one self-portrait?

my favorite of us...even if it is blurry.

set the camera on TV mode for 1 second...and caught all the flashbulbs going when kenny came on stage.

drunken goofs really had my attention - since i had a ton of photos of them. my favorite? this guy, who was dancing on top of the trailer, taunting security who was trying to get him down. he slipped...

and face planted on the table. knowing that he walked away from it dancing so i don't feel bad for enjoying it, i can tell you this:
it was awesome.

the four of us...and i am the only one not following the self-portrait mantra: "look at the lens, not the screen!"

and to close...
the seattle skyline with the blue lights.
heaven.
